Care & cleaning instructions for your boat cover
Aqualon Edge is a premium marine grade fabric that can give years of enjoyable use. This special fabric is a water-repellent, mildew-resistant two-ply polyester duck fabric with pigmented hybrid vinyl resin top coating. Proper maintenance is important if maximum life of the cover is desired.
Routine care is quite simple, but certain procedures are recommended.
How to CARE FOR your boat COVER
- Do not use the zipper to pull the two pieces of the cover shut as this can cause damage to the zipper. The cover should be pulled shut while the zipper has less tension.
- Pull the ratchet rope as tight as possible so you have a tight seal around the bottom of the cover. Make sure the cover is pulled down around the transom corners. Failure to secure properly can cause the cover to blow off in certain wind conditions.
- Use the supplied Velcro strap when the cover is off the boat to properly secure the cover.
- The preferred method is to remove the cover completely before lowering the boat on the lift. If you are unable to remove the cover before lowering the vessel, ensure the rope ratchet is released, the cover is fully unzipped, and the cover is loose and unencumbered by anything on the boat, lift, and/or dock. Boat Cover Solutions is not liable for any damage that may occur due to improperly releasing the cover from the vessel.
- Keep dirt, leaves, and other debris from accumulating on the fabric surface. Washing down with a garden hose on a bright sunny day is recommended about once a month.
- To remove dirt from either side of the material, use a soft brush and a mild soap such as Ivory, Woolite, and/or Dreft. Do not use Dawn, bleach, car/boat soap, and/or harsh chemicals. In most instances, all that is required is water and a soft brush.
- Dry your boat thoroughly before covering the boat to prevent mold and mildew. Boat Cover Solutions is not responsible for any damage to the boat if covered before thoroughly dry.
- Do not store or roll up while wet. Be sure to clean and dry before storage. Mildew can grow during storage if moisture is present.
- Do not steam or pressure wash the cover.
Uncovering & covering your boat
How to uncover your boat
- Remove all dock lines and shore power to your boat.
- Unbuckle the black clasp at bottom of zipper.
- Open the large Velcro pouch located near the zipper and release the rope by pushing the ratchet chrome bar towards the hook attachment. This will release the rope that tightens the cover under the chine.
- After you have unhooked from the rope, store the ratchet and rope back into the pouch to prevent them from touching your boat or getting snagged during the uncovering process.
- Unzip the cover by pulling the zipper cord that is coming out of the sleeve around the rope.
- After you have unzipped the cover, take a fist full of the cover on one side of the zipper and roll it into itself (rolling away from closed zipper position). You can put the open/close zipper cord within the rolled-up cover to prevent it from catching something on your boat.
- After rolling for about 12-18 inches, you will see a black Velcro strap hanging about shoulder level inside the cover. Grab this strap and secure the rolled material by placing the strap from the inside onto the external black Velcro square. Repeat this process for both sides of the zipper. This process is key to ensuring your cover will not get hung up on anything as you pull it along the track.
- After you have loosened the cover, you have two options. You can enter the boat and bring the cover around the transom and then push the cover forward toward the bow of the boat, or you can pull the cover forward from dockside. On most boats, the preferred method is to push the cover forward towards the bow while on the boat itself.
- If the boat is high on the lift and you cannot enter the boat, make sure the entire bottom perimeter of the cover is loose, the ratchet is disconnected from the rope loop, and the cover is away from the bow/anchor or above the anchor. Then you can lower the boat slowly on the lift to a stabilized position, but not completely floating. Caution: When lowering the boat, make sure the cover is free from the boat and is not hung up on any part of the boat to prevent damage to the cover, bungees, rollers, and track.
- Once you have lowered the boat, now board the boat and bring the cover around the transom and bring the cover forward towards the bow. Or you can walk the cover forward from dockside.
- The best way to secure your cover while in the stored position is to bring the cover as far forward to the end of the track and away from the bow and anchor and wrap the cover with the included Velcro strap.
- During high tide situations, do not allow the cover to sit in the water.
- If your track curves to port or starboard, push the cover to the end of the track and simply keep gathering it towards the post until you can secure the large side of the Velcro strap around the entire gathered cover and post, if available. Everyone develops a system that works for them.
How to cover your boat
- Have your boat stabilized on the lift in its normal up position if you can board from this up position.
- Board the boat and undo the Velcro strap of the cover and walk the cover back towards the stern.
- If you are unable to board the boat from the normal up position, just raise the boat enough to keep it stable.
- Remove the large Velcro strap and start to pull the cover towards the stern. Here again, some prefer to be on their boat, others prefer to work from the dock.
- After you have pulled the cover all the way to the stern and the cover is draping on each side, then raise your boat into the cover (make sure it is loosely draped and nothing is going to get snagged).
- Now you may release the black Velcro straps that are holding your zippered material open, and zip (using the zipper pulley system) the cover down. This too is an area where some like to zip all the way down and then pull the rope ratchet tight; others like to zip 2/3 down, then attach the rope ratchet and tighten firmly (this is key to your cover staying secure during high winds). Open the two Velcro pouches. Store the ratchet in the smaller pouch and close. Then wrap the extra rope up and secure it in the larger pouch.
- VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE ZIPPER TO BE BELOW THE BLACK CLASP. Clasp the black buckle with the zipper in the full closed position. This prevents the zipper from opening during high winds.
DO NOT OPERATE YOUR LIFT, UP OR DOWN, WITHOUT:
1. Releasing the rope ratchet
2. Unzipping completely
3. Ensuring the cover is hanging loose and unencumbered by anything on the boat or dock
